At IFA 2019, JVC and Panasonic announced an important collaboration to optimize HDR performance on the big screen. In addition, autumn novelties in sight for JVC D-ILA projectors
JCV and Panasonic have chosen IFA 2019 to formalize a collaboration aimed at providing 4K HDR images further refined especially for the big screen. To achieve this ambitious result, the two companies have optimized the performance of their respective high-end Home Cinema products, such as the Panasonic DP-UB9000 UHD blu-ray player and the latest-generation native JVC D-ILA 4K projectors. Regarding D-ILA projectors, an important update of the HDR function is also planned for November 2019.
The JVC–Panasonic collaboration unites two worlds on the “virtual field” of HDR. Since its introduction, the Panasonic DP-UB9000 has been considered among the best UHD Blu-ray players.
Its HDR optimizer works very well in synergy with the projectors of the new JVC 2019 4K D-ILA native range, equipped with deep blacks and a wide contrast range. The optimizer will perform a tone mapping of the HDR10 content based on the metadata, to adapt to the capabilities of the display. To achieve optimal HDR image quality, when the player is connected to a compatible JVC projector, users must select one of two dedicated color profiles, specially developed by the Panasonic 4K UHD player. The profiles work in combination with the HDR Optimizer to provide the best possible HDR images.
The user, in practice, will be able to decide between the setting “Pana PQ HL” (high luminance projector) or “Pana PQ BL” (projector with basic luminance), in relation to the chosen setting on the DP-UB9000 player. The high luminance projector setting assigns priority to the brightness of the image; the basic luminance setting gives priority to reproducing the wider color range instead. For the JVC D-ILA 4K 2019 projectors currently in use, the dedicated Panasonic DP-UB9000 color profiles are available through a firmware update, while the projectors in production will be delivered already with the new firmware version.
And so we come to the news related to the JVC D-ILA projectors: in November the DLA-NX9B, DLA-N7B and DLA-N5B/W models will receive a substantial update for the HDR function, able to significantly strengthen the current performances. This upgrade adds the new “Frame Adapt HDR” function, which analyzes the brightness of the HDR10 content for each frame and performs an optimal adjustment. HDR content is now available in various modes of use, mainly with the use of UHD Blu-ray Discs or via streaming services. The “grading” performed on the contents greatly varies. Some contents are adjusted to be bright and others set to be darker. If the correct setting is not used, the appropriate image cannot be displayed. For this JVC has decided to provide new solutions to improve the projection capacity in HDR, such as the “Manual gamma adjustment” function that can finely adjust the brightness or the “Auto Tone Mapping” function, which automatically adjusts the setting according to mastering information (MaxCLL/Max FALL) included in the content, ending with the aforementioned collaboration with Panasonic for the use of the DP-UB9000 player.
