Modern cruise ships resemble real floating cities, with all the services that a medium-sized city can offer. Including cinema, of course!
It’s known that the beauty of a cruise… is the journey itself, even more than the individual destinations. In short, the cruise, more than other types of travel, is an experience that is lived at 360°, and a lot of time is spent aboard those floating cities that are today’s ships. Cruise vacations are probably one of the greatest stories of commercial “turnaround” of all time: the ship, defeated by planes and trains in terms of speed, has re-launched itself with the pleasure of the journey! With 26,7 million passengers a year, the cruise sector cannot be said to be in crisis.
Therefore, TUI Cruises has decided to equip its Mein Schiff 6 with three cinemas, each equipped with a 4K Christie Boxer 4K30 3DLP projector, while Christie Pandoras Box is in charge of supplying and managing content.
Moreover, installing 4K projectors on a cruise ship is simple. More difficult is the maintenance! As explained by Torsten Hirche, Technical Director of TUI Cruises, on ships “there are constant vibrations originating from engines and waves, so we use shock absorbers and even suspension mechanisms to cushion them.” In short, for Christie Boxer projectors 4K30 vibrations and oscillations of the ship are a further challenge which, according to the words of the system integrator Andreas Köhler, has been largely won: “The vibrations on board are a great challenge, but the lenses of the Christie projectors face it the best.”
An additional Boxer 4K30 was then placed, in a special Tempest slot, outdoors on the pool deck. Final intervention reserved to Jochen Schelper, Project Manager Entertainment of TUI Cruises: “Our guests” – he said – “expect a high quality entertainment program able to compete with the standards to which they are accustomed in everyday life, both from the artistic and technical point of view.
In short, the cinema, on board, cannot be outdone compared to the cinema of the large multiplexes to which passengers are now accustomed.
