The possibilities offered by curved screens are often more interesting, and superior in terms of charm and immersion for digital signage installations that aim to have a specific impact.
The real world is all curves. The multiple environments in which a digital signage installation can be unravelled vary a greatly in the contemporary world: from airports to stations; from large shopping centres to medium-small stores; from public places to private companies; multimedia communication now comes in a thousand and one forms, and covers various needs, from internal to public communication, through artistic, impactful and immersive installations, designed to infuse, or enhance a place’s particular atmosphere.
LG’s proposal
The key words of LG’s Business Solutions proposal in the curved screen sector are “OLED” and “Open Frame”. The combination of these two cornerstones gives life to a series of flexible monitors explicitly designed for the creation of curved video walls, in which it is possible – moreover – to vary the degree of curvature during installation, thanks to a special calibrator.
The EF5E series offers 55″ displays with full HD resolution and OLED technology, which can be installed both horizontally and vertically and used to create incredibly sinuous and immersive video wall installations. In connection with the latest editions of important events such as ISE, IFA and CES, LG has deployed this flexible technology in the creation of OLED Canyon, fascinating video walls comprising 60 displays at the ISE and even 246 units at IFA and CES! Arranged to simulate the curves of a winding canyon, eroded by winds and weather, the flexible and modular OLED Signage Open Frame models of the EF5E series have given life to impressive and enveloping images that have not failed to amaze visitors.
The main novelty of the EF5E series consists of the opportunity to set the desired degree of curvature, according to the needs of the installation. These are therefore displays capable of stimulating and developing the creativity of designers and installers. A special, optional calibrator allows the EF5E series displays – compared to the previous generation of curved yet fixed monitors – to easily adapt to any kind of environment… and creative idea, supporting both concave and convex curvatures of up to 1000R.
New and unusual shapes, long, curvilinear monitor “paths”, designed thanks to 1080 x 1920 definition images, become more than just possible, but even easy to render. Even from a strictly practical point of view – momentarily putting aside the advantages of creativity and immersion – the LG EF5E series has undoubted strengths: its models can in fact adapt more easily to narrow and confined environments, making them “explode” in imaginative and enveloping shapes and images. These displays can also adapt to pillars and columns with a very small radius. The reduced weight of the individual panels facilitates installation and transport, even for a large number of units, in the case of rental or event preparation.
Long-term durability
The advantage of the extreme flexibility of the LG EF5E series also has long-term implications, as if the monitors were flexible even in the… fourth dimension! In fact, the curvature of the individual panels is not only programmable at will, but can also be modified at a later time, should you decide to transform one installation into another. It is therefore possible to re-use the same monitors that were put in place the first time, by simply adapting the curvature to the new idea.
From the image reproduction point of view, the two main strengths of these monitors are the blacks – which are very deep – and the wide viewing angle. OLED technology is based on self-illuminating pixels, without any backlit units, which avoids the problem of latent light in the background when a pixel is turned off. The result is a practically perfect black, with the logical consequence of a high image contrast.
In the end, however, the best business card for a product is found in its own use. And the EF5E series, although young, already boasts – in addition to the afore-mentioned exhibitions – an important series of successes. For example, Czech Television, the main broadcast operator in the Czech Republic, uses two 55” flexible LG panels in its news desk, as an element of fascinating visual design, as well as information. Meanwhile in Greece, moving onto the retail sector, Intersport – a large chain of sporting goods stores operating in 65 countries around the world – has enhanced its headquarters in Athens with an installation of four LG EF5E series monitors.
