To celebrate the millennium of the splendid Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, a unique mapping-based show entitled “Solstice du Millénaire” was organized

On June 23, 2023, a singular, very important “birthday party” took place. The birthday girl was nothing less than an enchanting location, not surprisingly included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey. Designed by Les Ateliers BK, what was staged was a unique sound and light show, significantly called “Millennium Solstice”, and based on exceptional mapping made possible by Modulo Pi media servers.

Consisting of five different “scenes”, the spectacular combined projection of video, sound and light beams also saw the involvement of 400 drones, and was created strictly respecting the historical and artistic characteristics of the site. The modules that housed the video projectors, in fact, were installed 200 meters from the Abbey. To ensure sufficient light emission over a projection area of over 17,000 m2 and accurately “cover” the different depth levels of the building, the AV technical supplier VLS had to use 36 double Epson 20K projectors, all managed by nine Modulo Player Pro, Modulo Pi’s media servers, to distribute and play multimedia content. Modulo Pi’s media servers are developed, according to company philosophy, in direct contact with creatives and designers from all over the world and boast, in particular, the X-Map function, which made it possible to manage the deformation of 2D images, allowing project over 200 independently deformed layers, so that the images perfectly followed the sinuous lines of both the island and the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey.

Furthermore, all elements of the show – from the projection to the audio tracks, from the light beams to the drones – were synchronized with the timecode generated by Modulo Player.

The event was a great success: around 15,000 people were able to watch live the ten intense minutes of the show, which took place – on 23 June – every half hour from sunset to 1am.
