Powersoft M-Force and Rat Sound SuperSub move the low frequency boundaries at Coachella 2018.<\/strong>
\nAn ideal location for music fans, Coachella<\/strong> was a real engineering challenge for Powersoft<\/a>,<\/strong> especially for super low frequencies. In the Sahara Tent,<\/strong> perhaps the biggest stage in the world for EDM music<\/strong> once per year, festival organisers pushed the boundaries of what is possible in sound design with an array of Rat Sound\u2019s SuperSub<\/strong><\/a> cabinets \u2014 each driven by Powersoft<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s groundbreaking M-Force<\/strong><\/a> moving magnet linear motor. Dave Rat<\/strong> of Rat Sound Systems<\/a>,<\/strong> who has played an integral role in Coachella<\/strong>\u2019s sound systems for 19 consecutive years,<\/strong> designed and deployed the SuperSub SDS30<\/strong><\/a> subwoofers, which delivered massive and consistent low-end frequencies for the many thousands of music fans attending the Sahara Tent.<\/strong>

\n\u201cCoachella<\/strong> has grown over the years, and it\u2019s probably one of the more challenging events in the world from a sound perspective\u201d says Dave Rat.<\/strong> \u201cThe challenge is the massive coverage areas, minimising offsite sound and the need for premium quality and consistency.\u201d In short, technologies are needed that push themselves to the limits, like Powersoft\u2019s M-Force<\/a>.<\/strong>

\nRat<\/strong> put together systems for seven of Coachella<\/strong>\u2019s stages that utilised premium L-Acoustics loudspeakers including K1<\/strong><\/a> and K2<\/strong><\/a> mains and L-Acoustics KS28<\/strong><\/a> subwoofers. The Sahara Stage<\/strong> alone featured a system totaling 252<\/strong> speakers. \u201cI think for any live sound reinforcement venue or situation, low frequency is the key for connecting the artist with the audience physically\u201d, he says. \u201cFor full emersion in music you have got to be able to feel the sound.\u201d
\nThe inspiration for the design of the SuperSub<\/strong><\/a> was born from Powersoft\u2019s M-Force<\/strong><\/a>, an innovative transducer based on a patented linear mobile magnet structure that differs from a traditional coil, taking advantage of its unique design to offer improved power management, electromagnetic conversion, reliability and maximum SPL.<\/strong>

\nWith eighteen SuperSub<\/a>s<\/strong> positioned front and centre and complementing the massive L-Acoustics<\/strong> system, Rat<\/strong> was able to deliver the a unique and powerful low-end reinforcement. In addition to peak sound performance, the M-Force<\/strong><\/a> motor provides the SuperSub<\/strong><\/a> with another valuable attribute: reliability. Coachella,<\/strong> with environmental factors like temperatures \u2014 both hot days and cold days \u2014 windy days, dust storms, and the sheer number of hours, needs a really tough sub. The SuperSub<\/strong><\/a> and its M-Force<\/strong><\/a> motor held up to the demanding conditions, performing without a hitch throughout the duration of the festival.

\nDave Rat<\/strong> knows that he has yet to reach the full potential of what the M-Force<\/strong><\/a> motor and the SuperSub<\/strong><\/a> design can achieve. \u201cTo use the SuperSub<\/strong><\/a> to its full potential, I would need to work with an artist who writes music that utilises its full frequency response\u201d, he says. \u201cRight now, most music is designed for existing hardware which tends to struggle below 30Hz,<\/strong> so if you have loudspeakers that go lower than anything else, that\u2019s an area that has been relatively unexplored.\u201d
