The massive project sees 3000 square meters of digiLEDs inside the majestic Moynihan Train Hall in New York City.
There are four 3.9mm MAX LED screens in the station lobby, while eight other 1.5mm digiTHIN HD LED screens are located at key points in the building.
The Moynihan Train Hall is an important rail hub derived from the restoration of the historic James A. Farley Post Office. Local trains (LIRR – Long Island Railroad) and inter-city trains to the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Wilmington, and New York City pass through this hub every day.
Natural light floods into the station’s atrium through the impressive 28-meter-high ceiling, which features installations by some of the world’s most highly regarded artists. The ANC and digiLED teams had to calculate the exact sunrise and sunset times over Manhattan to account for the natural light filtered through the ceiling. During the design phase, the timing and position of the sun were meticulously calculated to ensure that light was projected onto the screens at certain times of the day. To avert visual discomfort, digiLED outdoor louvres provided maximum shading for the 4 main LED screens (digiTILE MAX) facing the station atrium.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the digiLED technical team was unable to travel to the site to closely monitor the installation we made do with constant communication via Zoom and WhatsApp. Tom Mudd, digiLED’s technical director, worked remotely from his kitchen on the south coast of England, assisting ANC during the on-site commissioning and planning phases and also providing support during the project finalization phase. As a result, DigiLED and ANC completed the project on schedule, with positive feedback despite coronavirus-related difficulties.
